The Columbia Police Department announced a news conference planned for noon on Friday to discuss safety in Five Points.

Police have identified the three possible male witnesses to the shooting that paralyzed a USC freshman in Five Points in the early morning hours of Oct. 13.

So far, two of the witnesses have talked with investigators, police spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons said in a news release.

The police department continues to make arrangements to have the last male come in and discuss the case, Timmons said.

Police have described the three as being allegedly involved in the altercation with Michael Juan Smith that led the random shooting of University of South Carolina freshman Martha Childress at the Five Points fountain.
