New program seeks volunteer drivers for elderly, people with disabilities

October 24, 2013

— . The Central Midlands Council of Governments is seeking volunteer drivers for residents 60 and older, as well as adults with disabilities.

A free, Assisted Rides Program is being implemented in rural communities of Lexington and Richland counties, as well as Fairfield and Newberry counties.

Organizers are seeking people who already are driving a senior, family member or friend with a disability to appointments or on errands. They are being asked to take others along.

Participants may be eligible for mileage reimbursement. In addition, the Central Midlands Council of Governments would insure each ride.

Service begins in January, and the deadline to express interest as a driver is Oct. 31. Call (803) 376-5390.
