ROCK HILL — A woman who police charged with trying to steal soap and a toothbrush from a Rock Hill dollar store escaped from a pair of handcuffs and hid them in her bra, police said.
Police were sent to the Saluda Street Family Dollar, where they learned a woman, 24, stole a bottle of Dove body wash and a toothbrush, and then left the store heading towards Arch Drive, according to a Rock Hill police report. Police found the woman between Arch Drive and Confederate Avenue.
The woman told officers that she had been at the store, but she had to leave now, the report states. Police stopped the woman, who declined officers permission to search her purse. Another officer arrived on scene with a witness from the store.
The woman kept saying that she had to leave and tried to run away, the report states. A policeman grabbed the hood of her sweatshirt and forced her to the ground. She tried to pull away from the officer and refused to put her hands behind her back. Police managed to subdue the woman and found the stolen items in her purse.
As the officer was about to take the woman to jail, he noticed both of her hands were in front of her and the handcuffs were off. Police got her out of the car to re-secure the handcuffs, but they could not find them, the report states. The woman told police that she hid them in her bra.
Police took the woman to jail, where she was charged with shoplifting and resisting arrest. Officers recovered the cuffs from her bra.
