UPDATE: Mulch fire near Monticello Road extinguished

jself@thestate.comOctober 27, 2013

— Officials with the Columbia Fire Department say the mulch fire near Frost Mill Road has been extinguished and is no longer producing smoke.

The Columbia Fire Department responded to the fire earlier Sunday on property owned by the S.C. Electric and Gas company.

Authorities received calls Sunday morning about smoke in the Broad River Road area, Columbia Fire spokesman Brick Lewis said.

The fire started underneath large piles of natural vegetation, producing smoke but no visible flames. The property is located near Monticello Road and the Broad River. SCE&G uses the property to dispose of natural vegetation.
