October 30, 2013

BRICK LEWIS — Columbia Fire Department

— The Richland County Fire Marshal has concluded that the fire Monday night at a St. Andrews apartment complex was a case of arson.

When fire crews arrived on scene of the fire at the Ashton Apartments on Long Creek Drive (off Broad River Road at Interstate 20) they found Building 201 with heavy fire and smoke coming from the second story and roof. One resident was rescued from their balcony. The fire in Building 205 was minor and extinguished quickly, fire officials said at the time. No one was injured in the fires.

A preliminary investigation of the fires has been concluded, Richland County spokeswoman Melina Edwards said in a news release.

“Investigators have concluded that both fires in buildings 201 and 205 were intentionally set. The Richland Co. Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating leads in this case,”. she said.

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 803-576-3000.
