New Richland County program encourages designated drivers with freebies

This key chain gets a designated driver free soft drinks and water at participating bars and restaurants in Richland County.

COLUMBIA, SC Designated drivers can show a special yellow key chain at nearly two dozen area restaurants to receive free sodas through a new DUI prevention program.

The “Stand up, Stand out; Show your shield” program was introduced Thursday morning by the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, University of South Carolina’s Law Enforcement Division, Budweiser of Columbia, The S.C. Restaurant and Lodging Association and the Greater Columbia Restaurant Association.

Free drinks will be given to drivers during the evenings Monday through Friday and all day on Saturdays and Sundays.

The free key chains can be picked up at various locations on the USC campus as well as participating bars and restaurants in Five Points and The Vista.
