— A Richland County deputy was injured last weekend responding to a burglary call, when his patrol car ran into a tree after he lost control on a slick road.

Deputy Robert Furgal is being treated at the Augusta Burn Center, after he was trapped in his wrecked patrol car and severely burned on his feet, Sheriff Leon Lott said in a news release Tuesday. Frugal also suffered a fractured pelvis in the accident.

Frugal, who was reportedly in good spirits Tuesday, was responding to a burglary-in-progress call around 1 a.m. at the Food Mart convenience store,11409 Garners Ferry Road.

Authorities released surveillance video of the suspect, who forced his way into the convenience and filled a trash can with cigarettes. He also took potato chips and beer before leaving the store, Lott said.
