— A young mother and volunteer firefighter in Kershaw County was killed in a Wednesday morning crash near Bethune.

Erica Broughton, 26, was killed when her vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a column while traveling south on U.S. 1, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Broughton, who worked for the U.S. Postal Service, was delivering mail at the time of the crash, according to media reports. She had been a volunteer fire fighter with the Buffalo-Mt. Pisgah Fire Department.

“It’s with heavy hearts that we report the untimely passing of Firefighter Erica Broughton,” officials with the fire department posted on their Facebook page.

Fire department officials said Broughton’s husband Derek, brother BJ Marshall and cousin Jeremy Kennington are also volunteer fire departments.

Visitation will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Powers Funeral Home in Lugoff. The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Abney Baptist Church, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
