AMA: S.C. health insurance among least competitive

November 8, 2013

South Carolina has one of the least competitive commercial health insurance markets in the country, according to a new report by the American Medical Association.

The medical group lists South Carolina as the sixth least competitive insurance state, behind Alabama, Hawaii, Michigan, Delaware and Alaska.

BlueCross BlueShield of S.C. handles 60 percent of the market in the state, while UnitedHealthcare is the second largest with 15 percent.

BlueCross BlueShield has 66 percent of the Health Maintenance Organization market in the state and 81 percent of the Preferred Provider Organization market.

South Carolina is among 15 states in which one company has a majority share of the market, according to the report, which examines fully insured and self-insured plans in 386 metropolitan areas.
