COLUMBIA, SC Savannah Police Department confirmed that a runner in Saturday's Rock N Roll Marathon in Savannah collapsed and died just before the finish line.

Local TV reported that the runner was a 35-year-old male from South Carolina but did not say where in South Carolina.

Marathon organizers released the following statement Saturday from the race’s medical director, P.Z. Pearce:

“We regretfully confirm that a participant passed away at today’s Savannah Marathon. Our hearts go out to the family and friends of this runner. This is a difficult and tragic situation, and we ask everyone to keep the family in your thoughts and prayers.”
