I-20 widening project in northeast Richland shifts direction starting Saturday

November 13, 2013

— The I-20 widening project in northeast Richland County shifts from the eastbound to the westbound lanes near I-77 starting Saturday, November 16, the state Department of Transportation announced Wednesday.

Eastbound traffic, which has been disrupted for months, returns to its normal two-lane configuration as the disruptions move across the median.

While the existing roadway between Spears Creek Church Road and I-77 is removed and reconstructed, westbound traffic will be split into two lanes each bordered by concrete barriers. Motorists exiting the interstate at Spears Creek Church Road and Clemson Road will have to chose the right lane before the split occurs. The left lane will not have access to these exits.

SCDOT estimates the new traffic pattern will be in place from 3 to 4 months.
