— About 100 people were evacuated shortly after noon Wednesday from the Matthew Perry US federal courthouse in downtown Columbia after a fire alarm sounded throughout the three-story building.

However, Columbia firefighters arriving on the scene issued an "all clear" shortly before 1 pm and the public and court personnel were allowed back in.

A city fire department spokesman said the alarm was "activated by cooking" - likely meaning someone overheated their lunch in an eating area microwave.
