Camden man charged with sexually assaulting 9-year-old

KERSHAW COUNTY A 39-year-old Camden man has been charged with sexualling assaulting a 9-year-old.

Christopher D. Yates, who lives on Lakeshore Drive, turned himself in to the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Department and was charged wth criminal sexual conduct in the third degree.

Sheriff Jim Matthews in a press release said the sheriff’s department was notified by the girl’s mother on Oct. 25 that Yates had touched her daughter inappopriately several times in the past year.

The mother had become concerned with the girl’s grades had been dropping and her attitude had changed. The press release said the girl told her mother that she had been touched and that the man had sent her texts and Facebook messages.

Deputies interviewed Yates on Nov. 19, and was subsequently placed under arrest. Other instances of inappopriate conduct with another girl are being investigated.

Yates has no prior criminal record. The penalty is a maximum of 10 years incarceration.
