U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn, D-Columbia, discusses federal budget talks on NewsOne Now.

U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn, South Carolina's only Democrat on Capitol Hill, said he hopes to have a deal to avert another federal government shutdown a month before the January deadline.

"We're headed in that direction," he said during an appearance on NewsOne Now with Roland Martin. "We're working hard to trying to find some common ground.

"I'm afraid that these folks are waiting for us to get rid of Social Security and Medicare and these are not things Democrats are going to get rid of," added Clyburn, who is part of the budget negotiation committee. "We need to get rid of these tax incentives or preferences that people are enjoying."
