Can Coastal Carolina beat South Carolina?
Sure, says Chanticleers coach Joe Moglia, but its going to take a long list of breaks.
The No. 12 Gamecocks are going to have to make some mistakes, Moglia said. They are going to have to have some critical penalties. They are going to have to have a couple turnovers. They are going to have to make a couple mistakes in their coverage. If those things happen, itll be an interesting game in the fourth quarter.
The No. 7 Chanticleers (10-1 in the Football Championship Subdivisions Big South Conference) will have to use the opposite script, their coach said. Coastal Carolina is a 34.5-point underdog.
From an offensive perspective, we cant have any turnovers. We cant have any stupid penalties. We cant give up a big play on special teams, and we cant give up big plays on defense, he said. We understand they are going to move the ball against us, but we cant give up big plays. When they score, if they score, they need to work for that.
In the past 10 years, Coastal Carolina has played four games against BCS conference schools. The Chanticleers lost those games by a combined score of 205-13. South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier probably will point often this week to the Gamecocks 24-7 win against Wofford last season, a game that was tied entering the fourth quarter, to offset that statistic in the minds of his players.
Well have our hands full (this week), Spurrier said. Well need to play well.
The Chanticleers are led by running back Lorenzo Taliaferro, who is averaging 133.3 yards per game.
They run the ball very well, Spurrier said. This running back theyve got is about 230 pounds, and hes been running through everybody, so were going to have to toughen up and stop the run like we did the second half (against Florida) and try to get them off the field.
Cornerback Victor Hampton insists the Gamecocks are taking the Chanticleers seriously.
We try to take every week the same, Hampton said. Coach Spurrier always tells us the next game is the most important game of our life and thats how were going to approach Coastal. Its an instate team. We dont want them to have bragging rights on us going back to Myrtle Beach.
The Chanticleers shouldnt expect a David vs. Goliath pep talk from Moglia.
We dont have any rules inside our program other than the ones of the university and the NCAA, but we have a standard that is not easy to live up to. Stand on your own two feet, accept responsibility for yourself and recognize that a man is going to live with the consequences of his actions, he said. Whatever the results that day are going to be, we can handle.
