Rembert raid closes alleged dog fighting operation

— A raid by state and local law enforcement officials of property in Rembert Wednesday uncovered an alleged dog fighting operation including an arena for dog fights and numerous pit bulls.

Thirteen adults were arrested and charged with animal fighting or baiting. One juvenile was also taken into custody, the State law Enforcement Division said in a news release.

The alleged dog fighting arena was located at 5165 Springhill Road (SC 920) in Rembert. about 14 miles southeast of Camden.

Agents from SLED, Kershaw, Lee and Sumter County Sheriff’s Departments and the S.C. Department of Natural Resources conducted the Wednesday raid. Authorities seized 19 dogs, seven vehicles, $3,000 cash, guns and marijuana.

The adult suspects were being held at the Lee-Sumter Detention Center Friday.
