Sunday letters: Raise gas tax to fix roads

Gas tax ILLUS.jpg

Columbia, SC In the Nov. 1 edition of The State, you asked for reader input on increasing the state fuel tax from 16.5 cents per gallon.

I definitely support an increase of 4 cents to 5 cents per gallon to help fund an area greatly in need of attention.

Our interstates are in dire need of major overhaul and are an embarrassment to South Carolina.

Most are two lanes only in each direction, going to three when you leave or enter the adjoining states, which provides a much safer road system. Many secondary/state roads are too narrow and also in need of repaving. The problem with the bridges already has received much publicity.

If the gas tax were increased, all who use the roads would contribute, whether they are residents or out-of-state drivers.
