Jockey dies in single-car crash in Calhoun County

— A 20-year-old horse jockey died Sunday morning in a crash in rural Calhoun County east of St. Matthews, officials said.

The victim, identified as Andres “Andy” Vargas-Sanchez, 23, of Mt. Holly, worked as a jockey for Webb Carroll Training Center in Calhoun County, coroner Donnie Porth said Sunday.

Speed may have been a factor in the crash, because Vargas-Sanchez was rounding a curve in his 2002 Volkswagen Jetta on a two-lane rural road when he left the pavement and hit several trees, Porth said.

Vargas-Sanchez survived the crash and was airlifted to Palmetto Health Richland hospital. However, he died early Sunday afternoon of his injuries, Porth said.

The incident happened on Longstreet Road about four miles east of the county seat of St. Matthews around 8:20 a.m., said S.C. Highway Patrol Sgt. Bob Beres.

Vargas-Sanchez was not wearing a seat belt, Beres said.

Webb Carroll is a modern 58-acre race horse training facility about 30 miles south of Columbia.

The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating.
