Jerry Glenn Helms

CLARENDON COUNTY, SC The body of 84-year-old Jerry Glenn Helms of Todd Branch Drive in Columbia was found Tuesday by Clarendon County deputies who were investigating the report of a disabled vehicle on Governor Richardson Road between Summerton and Rimini, Richland County Sheriff spokesman Curtis Wilson confirmed.

Helms’ body was located about 300 yards from the van after a two hour search of nearby woods involving law enforcement officers from Richland and Clarendon Counties. Foul play is not suspected, Wilson said.

Helms was reported missing Saturday by the Richland County Sheriff’s Department which said he had serious medical conditions.

Clarendon County Sheriff Randy Garrett told the Clarendon Citizen newspaper that Helms’ primary caregiver, his wife, passed away 12 days ago.

Helms was last seen Saturday morning leaving his home to run errands. How he ended up more than 60 miles from his home in Richland County and on a two lane country road where his van apparently ran out of gas is not known.
