Services planned for beloved Kershaw County SRO

— Memorial services for a beloved Kershaw County school resource officer will be held this weekend.

Robert Lee Evans died early Wednesday at a Columbia hospital. He suffered a heart attack Tuesday afternoon while directing traffic at Wateree Elementary School. He was 50.

His family will receive friends from 5 to 8 Saturday night at Powers Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Lugoff First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Lugoff-Elgin High School ABLE Club.

Evans, a nattive of Indiana, spent 20 years in law enforcement. He was a Kershaw County sheriff’s deputy and the school resource officer at Lugoff-Elgin Middle School. He also served as an assistant basketball and football coach there.

An avid sports fan, Evans was also the voice of the high school football team, according to his obituary. He loved the phrase: “It’s another Demon... first down! Let’s move those chains.”

Surviving are his wife of 20 years, a daughter, a son, a brother, a sister and two beloved pets, Mo and Harley.
