Baxter: All-Midlands title game set

December 1, 2013

THE FINAL WEEK is here and, based on the action this past weekend, the upcoming games have mouths watering in anticipation.

Class 1A ended Friday with two great matchups for the Div. I and Div. II titles.

Hunter-Kinard-Tyler captured the school’s first football title (Div. II) with a win over Timmonsville, 26-8. And Christ Church edged Carvers Bay, 28-21, in Div. I.

In Class 4A, Div. I, Dutch Fork went to Duncan and pulled off a huge upset, knocking off top-seeded Byrnes, 31-21.

In the other side of the bracket, Sumter got a road win over Summerville, 28-27, setting up a showdown between the Silver Foxes and Gamecocks. The last time a Midlands area team captured a state title in Class 4A was 1993 when Richland Northeast beat Hartsville in the Div. II game.

The last 4A, Div. I Midlands champions was 1988 Spring Valley.

In Class 2A, Batesburg-Leesville is in the title game agains Silver Bluff. The last time these two met in a title game, Al Lown’s Bulldogs beat Phil Strickland’s Panthers. The interesting thing here is Batesburg-Leesville coach Jerry Brown can become the second coach in state football history to win titles at three schools. Joe Turbeville coached title winners at Saluda, Spring Valley, and Irmo.

BIG WINNERS, BIG PERFORMERS:

Dupree Hart, WR, Northwestern: Had nine catches for 124 yards, three carries for 18 yards, and four touchdowns in win over North Augusta. With Hart’s nine catches, he broke the state record for career receptions (279), previously held by former Summerville and now Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green. And the 5-foot-6 Hart has another year of high school football left.

Matthew Colburn, RB, Dutch Fork: Carried the ball 37 times for 212 yards and three touchdowns in win over Byrnes.

Jarius Jenkins, RB, Hunter-Kinard-Tyler: Rushed for 213 yards and four touchdowns.

Demetrius Anthony, QB, Christ Church: Rushed for two touchdowns and threw for a third as the Cavaliers won their third consecutive title.

Jacob Park, QB, Stratford: Threw for 268 yards and three touchdowns, and ran for a score, while leading the Knights to the Class 4A, Div. II title game.

Kelton Green, WR/DB, Myrtle Beach: Had a pair of touchdown receptions and a late interception to seal the win over Marlboro County in the 3A Lower State semifinal game.
