— A Fort Mill hunter who family members could not reach after several hours was found dead in the woods Monday evening, officials said on Tuesday.

Jerry Steven Wilson Jr., 44, of Fort Mill was already dead by the time officials with the state Department of Natural Resources found him on the ground in a bundle of woods near Banks Road at about 7 p.m., said York County Coroner Sabrina Gast.

Wilson had been dropped off to the woods to hunt earlier in the day, she said. Family members had not heard from him in several hours and called authorities to report their concerns. Wardens with DNR heard the call relayed over emergency scanner traffic, checked the woods and found Wilson. He had been alone in the woods.

He did not have any cuts or bruises on his body, Gast said. His shotgun was found nearby, but officials have ruled out a possible suicide. It’s unclear how long Wilson had been dead in the woods.

His death, she said, appears natural.
