CHARLOTTE — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are offering a $5,000 award for any information leading to the arrest of Arthur L. Givens, who is wanted for the murder of Donald Everett Gist, the brother-in-law of Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin.
Police held a conference at 3 p.m. Monday at Police Headquarters to announce the award and discuss the need for the communitys help in finding Givens.
Givens should be considered armed and dangerous, police said. Anyone who sees him should not try to apprehend him themselves. Instead, they should call 911.
Gist, 38, was shot and killed Friday afternoon in the 2100 block of Beatties Ford Road near LaSalle Street in northwest Charlotte.
Police said the preliminary investigation indicates the shooting wasnt a random act, as the assailant and the victim appear to have known each other.
Its not clear why Gist was in Charlotte. Police have not said where he was from, but a public records search shows his most recent address was in Columbia.
On Monday, police said Givens has outstanding warrants for murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, assault with a deadly weapon and communicating threats.
He has an extensive violent arrest history that includes convictions for assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, use of a firearm during drug trafficking, weapon offenses, felony drug offenses and probation violations, police said.
Anyone with information is asked to call 704-432-8477 and speak directly to a homicide unit detective or call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
