Vote for your favorite marching band

We asked Midlands high school marching bands to send us their best competition performances.

Nine high schools in Richland and Lexington counties took the challenge and submitted their videos: A.C. Flora, Batesburg-Leesville, Chapin, Dreher, Dutch Fork, Gilbert, Irmo, River Bluff and Swansea.

Now, we want you to vote on your favorite. The deadline to vote is Friday, Dec. 13.

Go to thestate.com/education, and click on the headline that says VOTE HERE. Follow the instructions to listen and vote.

The band that gets the most votes will be featured on a full-page keepsake in an upcoming edition of The State newspaper, and online at thestate.com.

Wanted: Kids holiday drawings

December’s holidays are full of great things to draw — Santa and reindeer, starry nights and snowmen, New Year’s fireworks, menorahs, angels and more. So, as we do every year, we’re inviting K-12 students in Richland, Lexington and Kershaw counties to create their own original holiday drawings.

We will run our favorites in print in the two weeks around Christmas and New Year’s — and some of the “best of the rest” online at thestate.com.

The deadline for original artwork submissions is Wednesday, Dec. 11. Here’s what you need to know:

Please include students’ first and last names, grade and school.

Original designs should fit on an 8½ x 11 piece of paper. Send by mail to Holiday Drawings, Attn.: Dawn Kujawa/Newsroom, The State Media Co., 1401 Shop Road, Columbia, SC 29201.

The State is pleased to provide this opportunity to share information, experiences and observations about what's in the news. Some of the comments may be reprinted elsewhere in the site or in the newspaper. We encourage lively, open debate on the issues of the day, and ask that you refrain from profanity, hate speech, personal comments and remarks that are off point. Thank you for taking the time to offer your thoughts.
