Campillo, Nel card unofficial 59s in South Africa

Durban, South Africa ( - Jorge Campillo and Colin Nel both fired 11-under-par 59s on Friday at the weather-shortened Nelson Mandela Championship, though the scores were deemed unofficial because the round was played with preferred lies.

The event, which started Wednesday to accommodate the funeral of its namesake, Nelson Mandela, has been beset by three days of suspensions and weather delays due to heavy rain in Durban. The soggy conditions forced officials to allow preferred lies and modify Mount Edgecombe Country Club to a par-70 layout from a par-71. As a result of those changes, the 59s shot by Campillo and Nel, which would have marked a new European Tour record, were rendered unofficial.

Still, Campillo used his 59 to move into a share of first place with the second round still in progress. The Spaniard stands alongside Matthew Baldwin (62) at 11-under-par 129 through 36 holes as the tournament, which was reduced to 54 holes, continues to catch up.

Nel, meanwhile, is currently tied for 18th place at 4-under after carding a 77 in the opening round.
