— Richland County Coroner Gary Watts has identified the man found shot to death in a St. Andrews motel room on Friday evening.

Mark A. Edwards, 49, was found in Room 111 of the American Inn at 1337 Garner Lane by Richland County sheriff's deputies at about 7 p.m. Friday. An autopsy performed Saturday morning showed Edwards died from a gunshot wound to the head.

Deputies went to the room for a wellness check after family members were concerned they had not heard from him. When they were unable to get in the room, a manager opened the door, according to Sgt. Curtis Wilson. No motives or suspects have been identified at this time.

The coroner's office listed Edwards' residence as the hotel, which is on a frontage road near the intersection of Interstate 20 and Broad River Road.
