Led by hot shooter Spencer Carlson, Hammond improved to 7-0 on Saturday, defeating host Ridge View 65-43 in the Bojangles Basketball Bash.

Carlson hit six of nine 3-point buckets and scored 16 points and six rebounds to lead the team. Sophomore guard Seventh Woods had 15 points and Xavier McDaniel posted 11.

Ridge View’s Malik Timmons scored 11 points to pace the Blazers (1-4).

“This is our seventh game in 10 days, so we need a break,” Hammond coach Mark McClam said. “Fortunately, we shot the really well in the first half, with the threes, got a little space there. Spencer Carlson was unreal, he was four-for-five in the first half. Overall, a great team game, we all played really well.”

Ridge View coach John Combs said, “If you would have told me Seventh Woods was going to 1-for-6 from 3-point range, 6-for-13 from the floor, I’d feel pretty good about what we’re doing.”

“But Hammond is not just about just Seventh Woods, they’ve got other players. They’re not just also about Xavier McDaniel.

“Spencer Carlson, we just did a poor job of recognizing and stopping him,” he said.

With USC coach Frank Martin in the packed stands, the Skyhawks were steady from the start.

Hammond hit three 3-balls in the first quarter, with two from Carlson, to take a small early lead. Woods pitched in two assists, two steals and a block in the opening quarter. A 3-pointer from Timmons helped keep Ridge View close in the first quarter.

Trailing by eight points, the Blazers slowed the pace of play, looking to bring the Skyhawks out of their zone defense.

With four minutes left in the first half, Hammond’s lead was still five points. But Carlson poured in two more 3s, and Woods added a short jumper at the buzzer to send Hammond into the break with a 34-20 lead.

Combs said, “Give credit to Hammond for causing us problems defensively.”

Ridge View’s defense could not shut off the perimeter, and Hammond started hot in the third.

Woods started a 9-2 Hammond run with a 3-pointer and a dunk. Forward Chevez Goodwin kicked in nine points and six rebounds in the second half to boost the Skyhawks.

Woods finished with six assists and four steals.

Combs said it was a learning experience for his young team.

“It’s only going to help us get better as we build toward region play,” he said.
