LEXINGTON 2 School Board member Beth Branham has been named president of the S.C. School Boards Association.

RICHLAND NORTHEAST HIGH SCHOOL theater students Hannah Barton, Rayana Briggs and Amanda George have been selected to represent South Carolina at the Southeastern Theatre Conference High School Festival in March.

DUTCH FORK HIGH SCHOOL’s dance team, the Dutch Fork Dazzlers, have been invited to perform during the pre-game show at the Capital One Bowl in Orlando, Fla. on Jan. 1.

GILBERT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL art teacher Angela Zokan has been named 2014 Promising Young Art Educator of the Year by the S.C. Art Education Association.

SPRING VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL student Troy Herrmann has been selected to play the French horn with the 2014 Honor Band of America.

PLEASANT HILL MIDDLE SCHOOL assistant principal Michele Zee has been named the 2014 Middle School Assistant Principal of the Year by the S.C. Association of School Administrators.

BLYTHEWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL has been named a National Beta School of Distinction. The award recognizes the success of the school’s Beta Club.

COMMUNITY

KEEP THE MIDLANDS BEAUTIFUL recognized the following people and organizations at the annual Gala for a Greener Midlands on Dec. 5: Carl Manheim, Keep the Midlands Beautiful Benefactor Award; Midlands Orthopedics, Green Small Business Award; Gills Creek Watershed Association, Green Nonprofit Award; Forest Lake Presbyterian Church, Green Neighborhood/Community Group Award; Westinghouse Electric Company, Green Large Business Award; Richland County Recycles Day, Green Event Award; Rep. James Smith, Green Elected Official Award; West Columbia Police Department’s Capt. Mark Jones, Green Law Enforcement Officer of the Year; and Jane Hiller, Keep the Midlands Beautiful Volunteer of the Year.

LEXINGTON 1 Parent Educator Missy Martin has received a Heroes in the Field Award from the Palmetto Healthy Start program for her work with the district’s Teen Parenting Program.

MILITARY

AIR FORCE RESERVE AIRMAN JOSHUA M. WALTERS has graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Joyce Perkins of Eastover and Marick Walters of Columbia.

NAVY SEAMAN RECRUIT LANDON W. WYMER has completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is the son of Juli A. Wymer of Prosperity.

ARMY NATIONAL GUARD PFC. TYWON A. PELZER has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson. He is the son of Joanne Pelzer of Columbia.
