Aiken deadly hit-and-run suspect arrested

— A 23-year-old man has been arrested in the weekend hit-and-run death of a pedestrian on a rural Aiken County road.

Michael Anthony Cornelius of New Ellenton has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving death, said S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Corporal Sonny Collins.

The Aiken County coroner’s office has identified the person killed while walking on Whiskey Road between 11:30 p.m. Friday and early Saturday morning as Shawnt'a Smalls, 27, of Aiken, according to reports.

Collins said the suspect fled the scene after his car struck and killed Smalls.
