COLUMBIA, SC The Columbia Fire Department responded Monday evening to a fire at a strip mall on Garners Ferry Road.

The fire department was dispatched at 5 p.m. and smoke was coming from the roof upon arrival, said Brick Lewis, a fire department spokesman. The fire, which was on the 7500 block of Garners Ferry Road, was contained to one business and no one was injured, Lewis said.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control in about 30 minutes, Lewis said. Damage estimated at $35,000.

Investigators determined the fire was caused by an electrical malfunction in exterior signage, Lewis said.

The same strip mall caught fire in January 2012 at the popular Big T’s Barbecue restaurant. The fire forced the restaurant to close for at least one week.

Big T’s was not damaged in the Monday fire, Lewis said.
