South African President Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela may very well have done great things, but I have to side with Pickens County Sheriff Rick Clark, who refused an order by President Obama that flags be lowered in his honor (“Sheriff won’t fly flag at half-staff for Mandela,” Dec. 7).

Clark noted correctly that “The flag at half-staff is for Americans’ ultimate sacrifice for our country.”

The fact that the president of the United States ordered this is absolute abuse of the position.
