Monday letters: Common Core must be stopped

— Common Core State Standards is not a mere tweaking of our educational system. It is a top-to-bottom transformation of it. If this were an earthquake, it would register a 7.5 or higher on the Richter scale. It was slipped in under the radar without parents, the state legislatures or the general public knowing about it. We were informed, after the fact, that it was a done deal, and that we needed to just accept it. It would be the greatest thing since indoor plumbing.

It already has been in effect in the math and English curriculums and soon will be expanded throughout the system.

The teacher is now a “facilitator.” Traditional methods of teaching largely have been abandoned for “discovery learning.” There is “fuzzy math,” “spiraling” and other such gimmickry. It is a one-size-fits-all approach to education. Our children are being used as guinea pigs in this massive experiment that will take many years to properly evaluate. They are not getting the solid, well-rounded education that they deserve.
