— Lexington County Sheriff’s investigators arrested a 20-year-old West Columbia man in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred Monday on March Road.

Joshua Cody “Lil Miz” Young turned himself in around noon Tuesday to a law firm in Columbia, according to a Lexington County Sheriff’s Department press release. Young was charged with murder, first-degree burglary and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, the release said.

Around 3:55 p.m. Monday, Young, who was armed with a 9 mm Beretta handgun, broke into the home of Shane Diquan Brooks, 19, the arrest warrant said.

The two men fought, and Brooks suffered a gunshot wound in his upper leg during the fight, the sheriff’s press release said. Brooks and Young were acquaintances, the release said.

Young fled the home after the shooting, the release said.

A witness told investigators that Young had broken into the house through a back door. The witness recognized Young and was able to identify him for police, the press release said.

Brooks was transported by ambulance to the hospital where he was pronounced dead Monday evening, the release said.

Young was being held on Tuesday at Lexington County Detention Center while awaiting a bond hearing.
