— Roland Smith confirmed what was expected -- that he would not seek another term in the General Assembly.

From The Associated Press:

One of the longest-serving members of the South Carolina House says he won't seek re-election next year.

The Aiken Standard reports that Rep. Roland Smith told the newspaper Monday he will retire. The Warrenville Republican had said he would announce his decision during the Jan. 13 meeting of Aiken County's legislative delegation.

Smith says he wanted to go ahead and make the announcement because people were talking about it.

The 80-year-old retired minister and rural mail carrier was first elected in 1989. He is the father of Republican Rep. Garry Smith, who has represented parts of Greenville County since 2003.
