Cold outbreak in SC: How low will it go?

jholleman@thestate.comJanuary 5, 2014

There's no doubt the air will be frigid early this week in the Midlands, the only question is how low the temperatures will go.

The National Weather Service forecasts 15 early Tuesday. And with a breeze early Tuesday, the wind chill is Columbia could be in the single digits.
The extremely cold air could stick around long enough for temperatures to drop into the teens early Wednesday before lows return closer to winter normals late Thursday.
Meteorologists nationwide are painting this cold blast in historical terms, but it might not break any daily records in Columbia. The local records are 10 for Jan. 6, 16 for Jan. 7, 12 for Jan. 8 and 6 for Jan. 9
The last time Columbia dipped below 20 was Jan. 4, 2012, when the temperature hit 19. The last multi-day trip below 20 was in December 2010, when it hit 18 on Dec. 14 and 15 on Dec. 15.
