Region 4-3A basketball resumes with a full slate of varsity doubleheaders on Tuesday.
Lower Richland and Dreher makes their conference debuts. LR plays at Chapin, while Dreher hosts Camden. Meanwhile, A.C. Flora plays at first-year River Bluff. Westwood has this rounds bye.
The LR and Dreher girls are heavily favored to duel for the region championship again this season, and possibly the 3A state title as well. Lower Richland ran the table last season (10-0 in the region, 26-0 overall) on the way to replacing the Blue Devils atop the conference and classification heaps.
Lower Richland is off to an 8-1 start and is riding a seven-game winning streak. The Diamond Hornets closed out December with a rousing 52-35 win over Irmo in the Bank of York/Wing Bonz Christmas Tournament championship game. LR handed Irmo its first loss of the season and avenged a loss to the Yellow Jackets in the semifinals of the A.C. Flora preseason tourney.
The game at Chapin features two of the top senior players in the Midlands LRs Breshay Johnson (17.0 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 3.9 spg) and ShaLeighya Sulton (21.1 ppg, 7.1 rpg, 3.0p spg) of the host Eagles. Sulton scored the 1,000th point of her four-year varsity career on Dec. 27 against Swansea.
Chapin (10-4) has won nine of its last 10 games after getting off to a slow start.
Drehers girls went 7-2 in December, losing the final two outings at the elite CresCom Bank tournament in Myrtle Beach. Senior Kaydra Duckett and sophomore Jhileiya Dunlap have been the Blue Devils leaders to date.
The Dreher boys (7-4) are looking to abort a three-game losing streak.
