TIM DOMINICK — tdominick@thestate.com

— A sinkhole opened up early Thursday morning in north Columbia near Colonial Drive and Lorick Avenue.

According to Columbia Police Department Spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons, work crews are on their way, and the area has already been marked off.

Timmons said the front wheel of a school bus is believed to have gone into the sinkhole, but no injuries have been reported.

A Richland School District One spokeswoman confirmed children from that district were on the bus, but there were no injuries. She said another bus was sent, and took the children to school.

The school district spokeswoman said she is checking to see which school the bus was from. She did not know how the wheel got stuck in the sinkhole.

Check back with The State for more information as it becomes available.

The area is in a mostly residential community, about one-half mile north of the Palmetto Richland Heath hospital complex, and between I-277 and North Main Street.
