SC college notes: National online degree rankings include five S.C. schools

Five S.C. schools ranked in the Top 100 of U.S. News & World Report’s Best Online Programs for 2014.

Best online bachelor’s degree programs included the University of South Carolina Aiken at No. 41, followed by Charleston Southern University at No. 56 and Limestone College at No. 93.

The University of South Carolina Columbia was recognized for three of its online graduate degree programs; the school came in at No. 16 in nursing, No. 36 in engineering and No. 15 in education.

The Medical University of South Carolina ranked second in the nation for its online graduate nursing program. USC Aiken ranked 84th for its online graduate education program.

Winthrop announces two new hires

Winthrop University has announced that Jeffrey Perez will join the school as president Jayne Marie “Jamie” Comstock’s senior counsel for public affairs.

Perez leaves The Citadel, where he has worked as vice president for external affairs for the past five years. In his new role, which begins Feb. 1, he will serve as public affairs strategist and communications adviser for the president and her advisory council. He also will serve as Winthrop’s spokesman on issues involving public policy.

Winthrop also has hired Eduardo Prieto as vice president for access and enrollment management. The Oklahoma native worked most recently as an associate vice president for enrollment at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. In his new position, he will oversee the recruitment and retention of students. Prieto will begin Jan. 27.
