Monday letters: Slow drivers need left lane

January 13, 2014

— I’m one of those slow drivers in the left lane, but not because I’m distracted. In many places when the road goes from four lanes to two, it is the right lane that ends. If I try to drive the speed limit in the right lane, I have to merge with traffic going 15-20 mph faster. Instead, I get in the left lane a mile or two early and let the speeders pass to the right. Many other drivers use this same approach in the area where I drive.

If we are going to treat the left lane as the passing lane it should be, we need the passing (left) lane to end, not the through lane. Otherwise, I think anything that encourages “drive to the right, pass to the left” is a good thing.
