ORANGEBURG COUNTY — A 4-month-old girl taken from a home Tuesday and found alone on a highway in the next county was grabbed by seven armed men, officials say.
Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell provided some additional details of the incident on Wednesday.
Ravenell said officers were called shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday to the home on Catamont Road in Holly Hill. Deputies were told that seven unknown men with guns forced their way into the home and forced three adults and six juveniles to the floor, Ravenell said.
Injured in the attack was a 52-year-old woman, who was hit in the head with a gun while she protected her grandson.
A girl, just four months old, was taken from the home and found a short time later on a road in Berkeley County. Officials said despite being alone and left on the side of the road, she was unharmed.
Ravenell said Wednesday deputies are considering the incident a “random act of violence.”
“We will locate the cowards who entered the residence and snatched an innocent child from their family and later discarded the helpless child on the side of a road,” he said in a release.
“We are continuing to interview witnesses, collect evidence, and will be working with all available resources to bring these individuals back to Orangeburg County to stand for the charges they have committed against this family.”
