Infections shut down Dutch Fork wrestling

January 19, 2014

The Dutch Fork wrestling program has been suspended indefinitely as the school and district work to discern the cause of a rash of skin infections that has affected 17 student-athletes in recent weeks.

The Silver Fox wrestling team, coached by Douglas Rivers, had been scheduled to compete in the Bob Mauldin Classic tournament in North Carolina on Saturday.

Instead, players and parents were informed that they would not participate, and that the program would remain suspended while the source of the infections is investigated.

Dutch Fork, coming off a loss to Lexington on Jan. 15, is ranked No. 12 in Class 4A in the SC Wrestling Coaches’ Association poll. The Silver Foxes were scheduled to host Irmo on Jan. 22 in their regular season finale. State playoffs begin on Feb. 8.

Dutch Fork athletics director Tom Knotts could not be reached for comment.
