A Shelby man who had just been escorted out of an adult video and novelty store was charged with attempted murder after police say he tried to run over one of the people who asked him to leave.
Robert Keith Bland, 50, was being held in Gaston County Jail on a $750,000 bond on Sunday, according to Gaston County Police. Hes charged with attempted first-degree murder.
The incident happened at Lauras Video store at 4008 Kings Mountain Highway on Saturday, which has sold adult videos and novelties since 1996. Police were called there on Saturday in reference to a person being intoxicated and refusing to leave the premises.
But before an officer arrived, the call was updated to an assault.
Officers determined that the assault victim and one of the stores owners had escorted the man to his car in the parking lot and told him to leave. It was unclear why the man was kicked out and police havent said whether the victim was an employee of the store.
Moments later, the victim was struck from behind by the suspects vehicle, according to a Gaston Police statement. The suspect fled the scene and was later captured in Cleveland County, where he was charged with driving while impaired.
The victim was transported to Carolinas Medical Center, where he was treated and released.
Bland has a criminal record dating back to the 1980s, according to a search of court records conducted by the Observer. He has been previously convicted of DWI, assault and of being drunk and disruptive.
A message at Lauras Video said the establishment is closed on Sundays.
