Tuesday letters: Be wary of minor league baseball

January 21, 2014

— Columbia City Council should give a lot of thought before committing $35 million to $42 million to build a baseball park at the Bull Street property,

The Capital City Bombers, a minor league baseball team, bombed. If people want to see baseball, they can sit at home and watch the Atlanta Braves — in comfort, with cheaper food and no tickets.

The University of South Carolina baseball games are available for avid fans. Other competition for a minor league team would be TV, movies, electronic gadgets, etc.

If Columbia spends the money and it fails, who’s to blame? I would say the person with power who pushed it.

We need to get ideas from everyone and might be surprised at what is suggested.

Mr. Mayor, Columbia is not Greenville, and we can’t copy it.

Roy F. Davis
