At least one high school coach in Georgia is having as much fun with the South Carolina-Clemson rivalry as Steve Spurrier.
North Gwinnett coach Bob Sphire told AJC.com on Wednesday that Spurrier and Tigers coach Dabo Swinney showed up for recruiting visits at his school at the same time this week, and he challenged the coaches to stage a wrestling match in the high school cafeteria and let him charge admission.
Dabo was in here first, and I was telling him how entertaining those two have been with their quotes back and forth, and their banter, Sphire told the AJC. You know, the first thing (Swinney) said was I really like him (Spurrier). Were really good friends. I will be darned if that wasnt the first thing that Spurrier told me when I tried to stir it up. He said, I really like Dabo. Were really good friends.
That didnt stop Sphire, who has turned his suburban high school outside Atlanta into a powerhouse, from teasing the coaches anyway, he said.
Dabo was leaving out when Spurrier was coming in, and I stopped them and said, Look, Ive got a fundraising idea. Theres a 1,000 kids over there in the cafeteria right now for lunch. Were going to go over and wrestle, and Im going to charge admission, Sphire said. They just smiled and laughed. They talked to each other for a little bit. I told Coach Spurrier that I get a kick out of his little digs, the way he stirs everybody up.
Spurrier and Swinney were at the school to speak to separate recruits. North Gwinnett defensive lineman Dante Sawyer has verbally committed to the Gamecocks. Find out more here about Sawyer and South Carolina.
