Flora's Howard closing in on 1,000 points

January 23, 2014

A.C. Flora’s Haniyyah Howard is closing in on a significant career mark. The Falcons junior shooting guard/small forward needs 32 points to reach 1,000 points in her ACF varsity career that began when she was in seventh grade.

Howard and the Falcons have two key Region 4-3A game on tap – Friday at Camden and Tuesday at Chapin.

“Haniyyah’s been an outstanding player for us, and hopefully she’ll have good games for us at Camden and Chapin because they are important games for the team,” said Flora coach Patti Moore.

Indeed, the Falcons are battling Chapin for a potential No. 3 state playoff spot and Camden for a top four, playoff-qualifying finish.

“A lot is riding on these next two games,” said Moore. “We’re going to need to have everybody playing their best.”

Howard ran her career scoring total to 968 points after depositing 28 points in a Monday non-region win over city rival Keenan. She canned three of four 3-point attempts in the game, underscoring the most improved aspect of her game.

“Haniyyah has really work hard on improving her shooting, and it shows in her stats,” said Moore. “Now, she needs to work on her ball handling skills a little more because she’s going to need at the next level.”

Howard is converting 37 percent for her field goal attempts, 41 percent from 3-point range. A year ago, the numbers were 22 percent overall, 21 percent from beyond the arc.

Howard went past the 300-point barrier for a season on Monday. She tallied 250 points as a sophomore, 212 as a freshman and a combined 202 points in her eight- and seventh-grade seasons.
