SC Forestry Commission to issue Red Flag Fire Alert Saturday morning

akflanagan@thestate.comJanuary 24, 2014

— The South Carolina Forestry Commission will issue a Red Flag Fire Alert for all of South Carolina at 7 a.m. Saturday until further notice.

Weather conditions, which include sustained winds (20 to 30 mph), wind gusts (30 to 40 plus mph), dry fuels and low relative humidity contribute to an elevated fire danger level.

The SC Forestry Commission said a Red Flag Fire Alert does not outlaw debris buring in most unincorporated jurisdictions, but it’s an advisory that strongly encourages South Carolinians to postpone burning. However, the commission suggests residents should check with local fire officials to see which local ordinances do ban buring during a Red Flag Fire Alert.

SC Forestry Commission said fire managers will continually monitor the situation. The alert will remain in effect until lifted by the commission.
