Sunday letters: Boat owners’ taxes too high

January 26, 2014

Tax time again. I cannot help but wonder why South Carolina boat owners pay more tax on a boat engine than on a house. I receive the homestead exemption on my home (senior citizen), and now I receive a school tax credit on my two-story home. Together, they bring the total tax on my home to less than that of my 2008 outboard motor.

Many boat owners provide safe boating patrols — to include saving lives on our waters as well as teaching numerous boating safety classes to the public — via avenues such as the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary; I use my boat 100 percent of the time on Coast Guard-authorized patrols. I wonder why we are not offered some tax exemptions on our boats and motors.
