POLITICS: Nikki Haley visiting Darlington Speedway today

Gov. Nikki Haley greets NASCAR driver Jeff Burton at Darlington Speedway in 2012.

Gov. Nikki Haley is heading to Darlington Speedway today during a swing through the Pee Dee.

Haley visited the historic NASCAR track for the first time during the Bojangles’ Southern 500 in 2012.

She is making what her office calls an economic development visit to the speedway.

Darlington has new leadership hired last year by the track owner, International Speedway Corp., which also is the parent company to NASCAR. New track president Chip Wile met with Haley at the State House in September.

Lesa France Kennedy, chief executive of International Speedway Corp., donated $3,500 to Haley's re-election campaign last year.

This year's Bojangles’ Southern 500 is slated for April 12 -- the week before Easter.

The race was moved a month ahead this year after being held on the Saturday before Mother's Day in May in recent seasons.

Haley also is visiting Hartsville Middle School in Hartsville today.

The governor lost Darlington County in her 2010 election against Democrat Vincent Sheheen, her 2014 opponent.
