POLITICS: American Party of SC launching statewide search for candidates

Posted by JAMIE SELF on January 27, 2014

The American Party of South Carolina is launching a statewide search for candidates.

The party will hold a news conference at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the State House to announce its official certification and search for candidates.

Co-founders Jim Rex, former Democratic S.C. Superintendent of Education, and Oscar Lovelace, a physician who once ran for the governor's office as a Republican, will speak at Tuesday's event.

Rex and Lovelace said they formed the party as an alternative to a two-party system.

The American Party will aim to provide a moderate third-party option that does not swing too far to the political right or left, Rex said in an interview last year.

The State is pleased to provide this opportunity to share information, experiences and observations about what's in the news. Some of the comments may be reprinted elsewhere in the site or in the newspaper. We encourage lively, open debate on the issues of the day, and ask that you refrain from profanity, hate speech, personal comments and remarks that are off point. Thank you for taking the time to offer your thoughts.
