7-year-old dies in early morning crash near Sumter Monday

— According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol a 7-year-old was killed in a wreck early Monday morning on Highway 378 one mile west of Sumter.

The crash occured around 7:10 a.m. Monday when a 2006 Mazda and a 1995 Saturn collided.

The driver of the Mazda was uninjured, but the driver and two children in the Saturn were hurt, Lance Cpl. David Jones of the S.C. Highway Patrol said.

The driver of the Saturn, a 26-year-old Sumter man, was wearing his seatbelt. He was transported to Tuomey Health Care, Jones said. The seven-year-old, who was wearing a seatbell, died at the scene.

Jones said the second child, an 8-year-old, was also wearing a seatbelt and was transported to Palmetto Health Richland.
